In most cases it is not so hard to acquire some insight into the products or services offered by a company. But how is the business model structured? What resources are needed to reach certain customers? What added value is actually offered and where is it created? And at what cost does this come?

Even the entrepreneur does not always have an accurate picture of the business model used for running the company. Moreover, experience has shown that members of a team working together for many years, all have a different idea of the business model they are working with.

After the existing business model (or business models, as many companies, often without knowing it, have more than one business model) has been mapped, there are several possible consecutive steps. The existing model, which has often grown organically and has not been consciously constructed, can be optimized. Sometimes it is also appropriate to develop one or more new business models for specific products or sections of your business.

A business model canvas is also the ideal way to subject a new product or service to the first tests, before committing to heavy investments.

When do we use the business model canvas?

Analysing a business model with the Business Model Canvas (BMC) can be the most appropriate step forward for a variety of reasons:

  • The BMC teaches you how to better understand your current business model.

  • The BMC lets you understand and analyse the models of other players in your market or in new markets.

  • The BMC facilitates the discussion with staff about important changes in the company. And also, the BMC provides an easy-to-understand common goal.

  • In some cases, the BMC is responsible for developing a portfolio of business models for different objectives, markets and/or products.

  • The BMC also assists in choosing the right model from a range of possible business models.

  • The BMC allows us to quickly test business models before investing in changes that might not yield the expected results.

How we work

A business model project always starts with a session during which we teach the people who will be working on the project a number of techniques.

Through a number of thinking exercises, we encourage the team to draw the business model canvas of the company, as it operates now.

We then look whether and how this business model can be optimized. It is even possible that we develop a portfolio of a number of models. From these, one or some are chosen to be tested in practice. Typically a first model is either modified or a new model activated within 6 months.
